Koh Samui Travel Guide

Koh Samui, Thailand: An In-Depth Travel Guide

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second most popular island destination, ranked closely behind Phuket. Every year, over 1.5 million tourists visit the island for its beaches, from the livelier ones like Chaweng to quieter spots like Lamai.

The island also has a well-deserved reputation as one of Thailand’s best spots for nightlife, thanks to its famous Soi Green Mango strip of bars and clubs.

To help you on your way, I outline the essential things you need to know below, and then I link out to my more in-depth articles about the island.

About Koh Samui and Why to Visit

Koh Samui is the largest island in the group of islands that form the Ang Thong National Marine Park, which is a popular place for snorkeling and kayaking. It’s a favorite destination among both budget travelers and people looking for a luxury beach holiday.

Beaches may be the main draw, but there’s much more to explore. You can sail to neighbouring Koh Pha-ngan on a traditional junk ship, visit attractions like the cheeky Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks, Big Buddha Temple or check out lively night markets like Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Koh Samui, but my personal favorite reasons are for the unbeatable beaches, happening nightlife, and variety of tasty Thai street food.

When to Go

Koh Samui's 3 seasons are dry season (December to February), hot season (March to August), rainy season (September to November). You can see the average temperature for each month here.

The best time to visit is from late December to April, as there’s plenty of sun with little rain. Temperatures are at their highest in April, so don’t forget to bring plenty of sunblock then.

October and November are the rainiest months of the year. You could score some great deals on hotels during this time though, and it is still possible to see sunny days, but it’s probably best to avoid this period if you’re looking to bring a tan back from your holiday :)
